Come Follow Me
3 Nephi 8 - 11 for the week of September 14 - 20.
Park West Ward Temple & Family History Scavenger Hunt
See how many of these activities you can get done in the next 30 days:
1. Go to www.familysearch.org/discovery and try three of the family
history activities there. You can find out which of your relatives looks
the most like you, see maps of where your ancestors came from, and many
other fun and interesting ways to explore your family.
2. Write a list of questions your descendants would want to ask you
about your 2020 experiences. Write down your answers to those questions.
3. Search the scriptures under "Genealogy and Temple Work" in the
Topical Guide. How do these doctrines apply to you?
4. Choose a deceased relative that you knew personally. Write an account
of something you remember about that person: a story from their life, or
maybe something you did together. Talk about what they did and said, and
how you felt. Then upload it as a Memory for that person on FamilySearch.
5. Find two deceased relatives on the FamilySearch Family Tree. Read
through the dates and places that have been recorded for their life. Is
anything missing? Check which pieces of information have sources
attached. Read through those sources. Do they verify the information?
Correct any mistakes you find. Try to fill in what's missing and find
sources for the information that doesn't have them. Remember to repeat
this process every time you look at someone in your family tree.
6. Write a chapter of your personal history. You might pick a specific
time period, such as third grade, or your mission. Or maybe pick a
topic, like favorite family campouts, or how you developed your testimony.
7. Do you have any family histories, ancestors' journals, letters, or
other written history that hasn't been computerized yet? Spend some time
typing it into the computer, then upload it as a Memory. If there is too
much, or you're not a fast typist, consider taking careful scans or
photos of each page.
8. Remember the Bishop's challenge to write in your journal. Write
something at least weekly about how you have seen the Lord's hand in
your life.
9. Get in touch with a relative, in any form of communication available.
Ask them some questions about their life and memories. With their
permission, record or write down significant details.
10. Go to http://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/open-houses to watch the
video that is shown at temple open houses (running time 9:35). How
could your relatives, friends, and neighbors benefit from seeing this video?
11. Index five batches of records. You can find indexing projects at
www.familysearch.org/indexing/projects.
12. The temple is the House of the Lord. He invites everyone to prepare
and visit, again and again. What can you do to prepare? Write a list of
specific things that will help you be ready. See
www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/prepare-for-your-temple-visit for
some ideas.
13. Look through the hymn book and/or Children's Songbook for songs
about temple and family history work. Sing, play, or listen to some of
them. Ponder the lyrics.
14. Find a relative who was born in another country, and learn more
about that country.
15. Go to www.relativefinder.org and sign in with your FamilySearch
account to see how you're related to famous Americans, latter-day
prophets, and more. You can use the password "zion" to sign in to the
private groups called "Layton Utah West Stake" and "Park West Ward", and
find church cousins close by! If any of the connections you find seem
suspect, maybe you have some cleanup to do.
16. Go to the list of temples at
www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/list. Choose one that interests you,
and look it up. What can you find out about this temple?
17. Pray for help in your own temple and family history work. Ponder
what part you can play in this work, and listen for answers. Write down
what the Spirit prompts you to do.
18. Do you have any photos of deceased relatives? Upload a few as
Memories on FamilySearch. Be as specific as you can about dates and places.
19. Write a story from the life of one of your parents.
20. Watch the video (running time 11:31) of Elder Bednar and Elder
Rasband's virtual tour of the Rome Italy Temple. You can find it at
www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/rome-italy-temple-virtual-tour.
Write or discuss your impressions.
21. Renew your temple recommend if it has expired or if you have never had one.
22. Read Preparing to enter the Holy Temple by Boyd K. Packer (found in the Gospel Library)
23. Ponder on the temple covenants you have made and the ordinances you have performed.
